Spainish Culture

On May 8, 2012, in Culture, by Nararya

Spainish Culture

Made up of 17 separate communities each with a unique culture and feel, Spain is known as a geographically large country which a common thread runs throughout all different regions. Certainly, coming to Spain, don’t miss a chance to experiencing Spanish culture. Here are some guides for you.

Language

Castellano is the official Spanish language of Spain and is spoken across the country. There are however several regional dialects as well as officially recognised languages in Galicia, Catalonia and the Basque country. Castillian Spanish is, however, spoken in these regions too, so learning Spanish ensures you will be understood wherever you travel in Spain.

Food

Eating and drinking is an integral part of Spanish culture.

Lunch is the most important meal of the day and is usually eaten any time between around 1.30pm and 3.30pm. Traditionally, Spanish people leave their place of work at lunchtime to eat with the family, something that still happens today.

The evening meal is Spain is generally eaten at around 10pm or later. In bars and restaurants, Spanish people often share a selection of small plates (tapas), which would typically include cured hams and meats, regional cheeses, perhaps some seafood and a slice of tortilla (Spanish omelette).

Drink

The bar is the hub of Spanish society. People of all ages and backgrounds congregate in bars to discuss the day’s events over a coffee, wine or beer.

Visit a bar around 8pm during the week and it will generally be packed with workers discussing the hot topics of the day.

Although a few bars have bans in place, smoking is still very much part of Spanish life. Bars generally empty as everyone goes home for dinner, then start to fill up again towards midnight when the Spanish head out for the night.

Culture

Visit Spain during the summer months and you are sure to have the opportunity to visit a carnival or fiesta. Each town and village has at least one fiesta each year, offering the chance for young and old to get together and celebrate. Expect a lively mix of drinking and dancing that can continue for several days.

Sport

If they’re not taking part, they’re watching on TV or talking about it. From basketball to tennis, the Spanish love sport. As you would expect of a country which is the reigning European champion, football is hugely popular. Other popular sports include basketball, tennis, cycling and motor sports.

Bull Fighting

Bull fighting is a sport which divides opinion in Spain as much as overseas. Many Spanish people view it as a noble display of finesse and courage, whilst others consider it nothing more than a barbaric display of animal cruelty. Whatever you may think about bull fighting, it is an important part of Spanish culture.

Generally speaking, the Spanish are a gregarious and sociable race. Compared to those in the UK or the United States, the Spanish spend far more time outside of their own homes. Whether on the beach or in a bar, the Spanish love to talk and appreciate the simple pleasures of good food and drink.

Mind Games!

On May 4, 2012, in Mind, by Nararya

Mind Games!

Have you ever been caught up in a thought that will not let

you out? Escape is not an option. What was a simple drip in

your pool of thoughts, quickly turned into an ocean of

tidal waves rolling into each, over and over again. This is

what it feels like to not have positive control over your

mind.

Our minds often repeat hurtful thoughts or scenarios over

and over, even when we’d much rather let them go. If you

start really listening to your inner voice, you are

probably dwelling on the past, remembering how someone may

have let you down, or how much anger you still hold back

from being hurt. If you fear the challenges that are waiting

for you, or you are ashamed at where you are now in your

life as compared to where you had planned on being, these

fears will definitely be in line to play the mind game on

you. All of these insecure or hurtful emotions that you once

tucked away will come back to play when the game begins.

Only when they come back, you will not recognize them. This

is your first bad move. Now the mind game begins.

The game is of the mind, to confuse you in your thought

process. When your mind is triggered even slightly by a

word, a picture, or even a look, what we want to do is to

think positive, nice, sweet and safe thoughts. If you have

the slightest opening in your mind, the game will begin. It

will take a thought and wait for your first emotional

weakness. Then it will twist that thought and magnify it so

that it feeds on that weakness and sends you into that ugly

world of negative thinking.

You would give anything to shake off these negative

thoughts, but we all know so well that it’s easier said than

done. Instead, you struggle through your day feeling like

you are a freak and that if you do not get a grip on this

mind game, and soon , you will explode. All that you want,

is to be free of negative thoughts and be happy all the

time.

You spend a lot of time thinking over negative feelings

and sulking over regrets and misfortunes. The worst part is

that the more you try to end this horrible game that twists

your brain so tight, the worse it gets. You will try to

avoid your hidden shames and worries, or drown them with

alcohol or drugs. All that happens when that little fix-it

ends, is that the mind game becomes stronger. New thoughts

continue, the game attacks again only to turn those thoughts

against you. You can feel them escalate into negative

scenarios in your mind, but at this point powerless. The

power of the game is winning and you are now in the

believing stage of the game. Your mind now believes your

negative thoughts. You are forced to react, and through this

reaction the mind game soars and takes over even further.

Now it not only controls you, but it has also taken control

of your entire world and whoever is in it at the time. You

collapse from the draining feeling of failure once again.

You feel that you will never be able to win this mind game.

You feel that you will be a pawn for the rest of your days

on earth. A doormat and a bug to stepped on over and over

again, because of your inability to gain strength and take

control of your positive mind. So why not just give in? Why

not just bow down whenever you fail to think positive

thoughts? Well, I will tell you why you do not want to do

that!

You are a human being with a heart and a brain. You were

given the ability to feel emotions. Emotions such as:

self-respect. self-esteem, humor, love, laughter, sexuality,

self-confidence, but most of all, you were given

intelligence and the will to survive. You were given the

gift of life. Those are the reasons to fight. How to fight,

is also right there in front of you.

You are already aware of the mind game. Most of you have

played it so long that you should be the champions by now. I

have talked about habits many times and I will keep talking

about them. Through habits you can defeat many of those mind

games. Try to simplify your thoughts. The stronger the game

tries to twist them, the harder you work to shrink them.

I read about an interesting way to look at this. Think of

your thoughts as a pop-up ad on your computer. You see it

and then you don`t. Or it pops up and you simply delete it

without giving it a second thought. Even if it was a

negative pop-up, you spend no time at all analyzing where it

came from, you simply carry on with what you were doing.

This is a good way to play, and win the game. Also another

way to play and win, is when your thought begins to twist

through the negative game, start to vocalize it. Sing it

quietly to yourself, or hum outloud. This will confuse the

game, and throw it off track. Immediately when you get a

thought that seems to be fair game, think of something very

funny or a very sad movie that made you cry. A very good

habit is to change your thought track. The game cannot keep

up when the track is jumped. Be aware that your mind is a

game field, but you have to play it in order to win. If you

do not play, you will lose by defeat. SAD!!! So my words to

you is this : KICK IT`S BUTT!!!!!!!

Science Education – Making Science Fun

On April 28, 2012, in Science, by Nararya

Science Education – Making Science Fun

Every school in America is required to teach science. This is because science and scientific learning is a fundamental part of our existence. Most everything that we encounter on a day-to-day basis is, in some way, related to science. Even when we are sleeping, science is there to explain why we need to sleep and what takes place while we are sleeping. Because of this, science education is essential to life as we know it. Of course there will be many people who are happy to go through life without knowing how a bird can fly. Even given this fact, there will always be something that they will need to know and understand that is grounded in science. Even if it is something as simple as ‘fire is hot’ or ‘getting punched hurts. Science is there to explain these simple things too.

A good foundation in science through science education is required for all children, but the way that this education takes place is not strictly defined.

With that said, many schools will take to science experiments using hands-on science products and supplies. This is an excellent way for students to ‘see’ the science around them. Often times learning from a book can be tedious and will cause students to become uninterested in the subject matter. A science experiment, however, is interactive and forces the students to take part in science learning. These projects don’t have to be complicated and will usually result in a much higher level of learning retention.

There are a few reasons why children better retain knowledge gained through scientific experimentation. One is it allows you to appeal to those children who are visual learners. These students are the ones who need pictures or demonstrations to remember things.

Words just don’t stick in their minds as well, but when they can see a science demonstration or visualize an experiment, they can comprehend and retain the subject matter with much better success. Many students tend to thrive in science because it offers the visual aspect that many other subject matters do not.

Another reason that knowledge gained through science experimentation is retained longer by students is because they are actively engaged. They can’t simply skim through the experiment, they have to make sure that they are doing things correctly, and the only way to ensure that is by understanding what is going on. It forces students to understand the science behind what they are doing, and if they don’t, often times the experiment won’t turn out right.

Finally, hands-on science experimentation gives the student a sense of accomplishment. It is a reward of sorts, to have the experiment turn out correctly. That reassurance and sense of achievement at the end of each experiment will cause them to want to do more. It will also give them more confidence in what they are doing and possibly cause them to take up more science projects on their own. They will already be comfortable with the process they need to follow and will merely need their own ideas and theories to start their own projects. Even their own small science projects will increase their knowledge of how the world around them works and functions.

NASA | Russian Runoff Freshens Canadian Arctic

On April 26, 2012, in NASA, by Nararya

The transpolar drift (purple arrows) is a dominant circulation feature in the Arctic Ocean that carries freshwater runoff (red arrows) from rivers in Russia across the North Pole and south towards Greenland. Under changing atmospheric conditions, emergent circulation patterns (blue arrows) drive freshwater runoff east towards Canada, resulting in freshening of Arctic water in the Canada Basin. Understanding this more complex pathway will help scientists make better predictions about the Arctic’s response to climate change. The findings appear in the Jan. 5 issue of the journal Nature.
